18 - FBA Meets Alton in the Big Easy-
And Tours New Orleans

Hey there!
I know many of you were waiting anxiously.
I think your patience will be rewarded!

Here’s the recap of FBA’s tour of New Orleans – and meeting Alton once again. Our N.O. Briner and FBA spent a little time getting to know each other…and touring the city.

Warning:
FBA was a little saddle-sore from all the miles he’d recently logged. And, he was a bit on the snarky side.

But, if you read between the lines…
I’m pretty sure he had a great time. ;)

N: Hi, everyone, I’m Nolafoodie.

FBA: And I’m Flat BA…

N: Hahaha, we just sounded like those Mac commercials!

FBA: (rolling eyes) Oh, yippee. *cough* Dork.

N: Um, anyway…
We just wanted to pop in and let y’all know what we’ve been up to over the past several days. FBA arrived on Tuesday, April 22. He was a little tired from his journey, so I thought I’d let him get some rest. I cooked some jambalaya so that he could at least enjoy a New Orleans-style dinner.

The next day was Alton Brown’s kickoff of the Feasting on Asphalt book tour. The event at Octavia Books had been slated for 5:00, so we arrived at 4:45, and the book signing was already in high gear. According to another fan in line, AB had arrived at 4:00 and began signing right away. Alas, there was no talk or Q&A session, just signing.

FBA: (snickering) Believe me, you didn’t miss much.

N: Hey now… The line was pretty long, but the staff kept things moving pretty quickly. As each of us approached, one lady took our books to hand to AB for signing, and another took our cameras for pictures. (The picture-taking lady, BTW, was very pleasant, loved Flat BA, and said she squealed when she found out AB was coming.)

FBA: Heh. All the ladies love me, of course, but him? I guess there’s no accounting for taste.

N: Unfortunately, this set-up theoretically allowed for only one photo, and it had to be taken with my cell phone camera to boot, because my “real” camera died. But as it turned out, the picture lady actually managed to snap a darn good photo.

Now, if I may backtrack a bit, for several months, I have wanted to ask AB if he would consider doing a “food-talk” show. The way I envision it, it would involve a changing panel of food writers, chefs/cooks, scientists, farmers, and other “experts” of various backgrounds, with AB as moderator, kind of like Bill Maher’s shows. Discussions would center around agricultural/agribusiness issues, environmental/sustainability issues, animal welfare, restaurant industry practices, and all sorts of fascinating topics about food.

FBA: Yeah, fascinating. (Coughing) Dork.

N: So, I had intended to ask my question, but there was really no time. It was more important that I introduce AB to the recently cloned FBA, and our conversation went as follows:

Alton: (When I presented him with FBA)
Oh, hey, I remember this one. Wait, didn't I sign him before? How many of him are there?

Me: Just him and the other one. They're going to follow you through the rest of your tour. It appears there's been an accident involving overnight shipping... so he's been bionically remade.
Alton: Ooh. Well, he does look stouter than I remember him.
Me: Yeah, he's been working out.
Alton: Unlike me. I haven't been working out. I'm lazy.
Me: Nah, you're busy. You're justified.
Alton: No, there's really no excuse.
Me: Aww. (Well, I certainly couldn't disagree with him, could I?)

FBA: (snickering) Heh.

N: And then it was time for the picture, so we posed, I thanked AB, and FBA and I left. I would have liked to stick around until the end of the event, but by the looks of the line, it was probably going to be quite a while. And given that AB had to be in Jackson the following day, it seemed clear that he would not be dawdling around. I just hope he was able to stay in town long enough to have a great dinner.

FBA: Believe me, there’s no need to worry about the dude missing any meals.

N: (Wagging finger) FBA!
Well, anyway, we then crossed the Mississippi River to check out some furniture stores…

FBA: Yeah, I come to New Orleans to have some fun, instead I get dragged on a shopping trip. Figures.

N: FBA had insisted upon riding shotgun, and that was OK, until he started wanting to drive. Unfortunately, FBA can’t drive because he’s flat and has no depth perception. But he’s a persistent guy, and we had to compromise: FBA rode on my dashboard.
N: I snapped some photos while crossing the Crescent City Connection to the West Bank, and then driving off into the sunset on the way back.

FBA: Heh. Only in New Orleans can you drive into the sunset while traveling to the “East” bank of the river.

N: Well, true. Because the river bends through New Orleans, when crossing the Crescent City Connection, “West-bank-bound” traffic actually travels due east, and vice versa.

FBA: Wow, fascinating. (Rolls eyes, coughs) Dork.

N: Anyway, I suddenly became very busy with some family events, as well as work, so I couldn’t spend as much time showing FBA around time as I would have liked to have done. But as it turned out, FBA didn’t really need my company, as he had been planning to get together with some old friends from – how did you say you know them, FBA?

FBA: I didn’t.

N: Oh. Um. OK, well, anyway, FBA went out with his friends most nights, and although I felt a little guilty for being a bad hostess, he seemed to have been having plenty of fun on his own.

However, today, we did get to spend one last afternoon enjoying New Orleans. Since FBA had gotten his fill of French Quarter, we agreed –

FBA: (snickering) More like, you decided.

N: We decided to spend the day sightseeing and enjoying some of the other activities New Orleans has to offer, besides those things for which it’s notorious. Since I had some errands to run as well, we covered a lot of ground.

First, we visited the Saints practice facility in Metairie.

FBA: Heh. Big deal. The Falcons’ facility is better.

N: Oh, right, being from the Atlanta area makes you a fan of those “dirty birds.”

FBA: At least I don’t have to wear a paper bag over my head when I go to games!

N: Excuse me? I’m sorry, but didn’t you guys have a 4-12 season last year?

FBA: (Mumbles under breath.)

N: Anyway, so then we visited the Uptown/Garden District area of New Orleans. It’s a nice place to go for leisurely shopping for unique items, great restaurants, and a place to just chill out on a beautiful day like this one. As we drove down St. Charles Ave., taking in the stately architecture and ancient oak trees that line the street, I think I spotted a smile creeping across FBA’s face.

FBA: Me? Nah.

N: Then we reached the city’s center of private postsecondary education: Loyola University and, literally right next door, Tulane University. Now, being an LSU student, I’m not a huge fan of Tulane, but I do appreciate its beautiful campus (though most of the newer buildings are just big concrete boxes).
N: I was pleasantly surprised to find that FBA was also eager to take a walk around these campuses. Matter of fact, here's a shot of you admiring Loyola University's Thomas Hall.

FBA: Ha! I was checking out the other bike.

N: And I thought you were contemplating an education!

FBA: Hey, where's that picture of Gibson Hall at Tulane?
I liked that building.
N: There is is. Then we spent some time strolling through Audubon Park, which was just beautiful.
N: Afterwards, we traveled along Magazine Street for some shopping and sightseeing with a more local flavor. Whereas St. Charles is elegant and serene, Magazine, which runs roughly parallel only four blocks away, is vibrant, funky, and eclectic, with a more pronounced artistic vibe.
N: Some of my favorite places to shop are there - like Blue Frog Chocolates.

FBA: But WE didn't GET any chocolates.

N: You mean, YOU didn't get any. *Grin*

FBA: Sure, pick on the flat guy.

N: Another of my favorites is Big Fisherman Seafood - which was featured in Feasting on Asphalt.

Before long, I could tell FBA had grown tired of my shopping and errand-running, so it seemed like a treat was in order. And what’s the best treat on a warm afternoon? Ice cream, of course! But not just any ice cream… today, we would have some gelato.

FBA: Mmmmm, gelato.
N: In a truly bizarre business move, a new, wildly popular, uber-hip “sweets boutique” called Sucre set up shop on Magazine St., selling handmade gourmet chocolates, desserts, pastries, coffees, and gelato.

What’s bizarre about Sucre is that they sell gelato only three doors away from another gelato place that had been in business for a few years:
La Divina Gelateria.
Yep, La Divina Gelateria was featured in Feasting on Asphalt. FBA and I were both a little disappointed that the strawberry-balsamic sorbetto was not available, but there were lots of other flavors to enjoy.

The store’s owner, Carmelo Turillo, recognized FBA from the Internet.

FBA: What can I say? My reputation precedes me.

N: We sampled several flavors, and all that sugar made it unwise for me to attempt to eat a scoop in-store. So, we ordered four scoops to share at home with the family. But then, FBA came up with an interesting suggestion…

FBA: A smackdown!

N: Right, a gelato challenge. We went over to Sucre to check out their gelato. Frankly, I had never tried their gelatos, having been too distracted by the chocolates and other desserts.
But today would be all about the gelato. We ordered another four scoops.

FBA: Ohhhhh, yeah… Gelato smackdown!

N: In short, for gelato flavor and quality, La Divina won hands-down. Some of the flavors available at Sucre were perhaps more “my thing” (mostly fruity stuff), and Sucre had a greater selection of sorbets, but La Divina’s gelato just had better flavor and texture all around. It certainly helps that they make their gelato completely from scratch, using natural local ingredients. I’ll still go to Sucre for their sparkly, fancy desserts, but when it comes to gelato, La Divina is divine.

FBA: Mmmmm, gelato!

N: Before FBA’s departure, we also drove through a little of the Lower 9th Ward. There’s not much to see there anymore. N: The debris has been cleared away, and now the area is mostly a field of unkempt grass divided by streets and dotted with a few slabs where some of the houses used to be.
We stopped the car at the Katrina Victim Memorial and soon a sticky gelato cone was being handed to me. FBA didn't say a word, but I understood that he wanted a moment alone.
N: And, we made one last stop alongside a trailer.
It’s sad, but I have no doubt that the area will thrive again.

Will you be heading this way again FBA?

FBA: Uh-huh.

N: For the food? The people? The history? The culture?

FBA: The gelato. *grin*

Thanks Nolafoodie!

Stay tuned food fans.
While FBA was touring gelato shops in New Orleans...
Flat AB was busy in St. Louis meeting Alton.

Those pics will be ready soon!

17 - Plastic Surgery on the Little Guys

We can rebuild him.
We have the technology.
We have the capability to make him
Better...stronger...faster

Oh, and waterproof.

That was, give or take, a conversation SlamDunkPro and I had a while ago. And, thanks to time and materials donated by SDP, the FAB 2.0 and FBA 2.0 clones are in the field.

The plan is for the originals to be "retired" and get some well deserved R & R.

Between the Flats' hectic schedules, and that whole "being made of cardboard and ink" thing, the Flat boys were a bit, fragile.

Now, their hardy.
*wink*

I'm not saying that you should go deep sea fishing with them. But, at least they can get splashed by a little pasta sauce without looking the worse for wear.

So, the song remains the same.
If you receive a Flat and meet Alton, please ask him to sign, date, and write the city on the back of the boy. (Go ahead and add a tiny date and city if Alton simply signs it.)

Speaking of which...
Nolafoodie will be seeing Alton later TODAY in New Orleans -
With FBA 2.0 in tow.

FBA 2.0 looks forward to getting a pic with the newly tanned fluffy version of his flat self.

*Grin*

Alton is on his Feasting on Asphalt book tour..
And, he makes fast work of the miles, on it.

16 - East Coast Briner Meet
Dining in Style!

Hey kids!
I just flew in from the East Coast and man, are my arms tired!

Actually, I'm still on a plane.
I'll arrive in Chicago soon, then after a quick layover, I'm off again.

But, hey - I had a fantastic weekend with a bunch of Briners and took a LOT of pictures! (As usual, click on the picture to see it bigger.)
Okay, first, you know what Briners are, right?
If you are a loyal fan of my blog, this is "old hat." They are a swell group of Alton fans who not only talk about good eats - but they prepare them and eat them, too!

Every few months a different group gets together someplace in the nation. This month it was the East Coasters.

And, there will be a Midwest Meet soon.
But, that's another post. *Wink*

So, a bunch o' Briners gathered at the
beeeautiful Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, WV.
Nice place, huh?!
On Friday night
Pixietoes, Kinsley, and Mongo joined KittyFixer, SlamDunkPro and me for champange and hor'dourves in the FAB suite.
KittyFixer teasted SDP that only HE would bring food to a 4 star resort, but...

"Hey, it’s a Briner Meet...Soneone's gotta cook, right?"

SlamDunkPro
served:
Crab Salad in phyllo cups,
Sun Dried tomato & basil pesto on water crackers with fresh mozzarella, and Hot Szechuan shrimp wrapped in snowpeas.
It was all fan-tastic!

Saturday morning we headed into town.
The Blue Moon Café is a fun place for a casual meal. Mongo and I munched on the Monument burger, which only comes one way – whatever way the chef feels like making it!
We all consumed mass quantities of their signature French fries which were excellent (not Popburger, but close). Then we headed back to the Inn.

Okay, confession time.
Sometimes I get a little jealous that Flat BA has a bike and I don't.
I scampered up on a gentleman’s BMW bike and tried to go for a ride. At least I got to pretend.
*Smile*

Dinnertime arrived, and of course I was was ready!
First there were the appetizers.
This one was the "Seafood “Trio” was really good.
Smoked Salmon with Citrus Crème Fraiche, Smoked Trout over Corn and Truffle Pudding, & Seared Scallop with Melon and Mint Salsa.

Vicky tried to explain what all that means. Then Eric tried.
But, it went over my head. (So much does!)
I just know it's good eats.

Before the main dishes arrived, we had a little entertainment.
You guys remember the "Mini-Vick's" ?
Sure, you do!
I stayed with them in Pennsylvania last month.
*Laugh*
I guess spoons are multi-taskers, too!

Then, it was my turn.
I did my best Frank Sinatra song.
(I was dressed for it.)
Okay, Pixie, it wasn't THAT funny!
(Maybe it was...)
There were MANY amazing entrees.
This one was:
Quails stuffed with Game Mousseline and Foie Gras, Pistachio Pesto Herbed Spaetzle and Seared Foie Gras with Huckleberry Gastrique.

Confession:
I cheated and got help from SDP and Kinsley on that one.
I thought it tasted great.
But, honestly, I don't know all those words yet.

Me? I woulda said:
Little chickens with some mousse-y stuff, with some, well, it was like liverwurst, but the BEST liverwurst IN THE WORLD!
And, some pasta with some fruity sauce.
(It was good. I know THAT much!)

I almost forgot about dessert!
We had cheesecake and all sorta of pastry thingies.

Didn't the ladies look pretty?
I was sorry to see the night end.

Okay gang, soon I'll be in Chicago, then St. Louis!
Gonna see the real Alton there.

And, Flat BA?
Well, he's been laying low, but he's gonna hit the road soon, too. He's off to New Orleans to see Alton on his "Feasting on Asphalt - The River Run" book tour.

If you need information on Alton's appearances, you can check his schedule at www.altonbrown.com. Look under "Where's AB?"

See you soon!

15- FAB is Stuffed - On Deep Dish Pizza!

Slam Dunk Pro, who interestingly enough doesn't live in Chicago, makes quite a beautiful deep dish pizza. With Flat AB's help, of course.

Many think that Chicago style has a thick bottom crust.
Nah.

Sure, deep dish, A/K/A "stuffed" pizza, can have a nice thick outside crust. But, the bottom of the pizza is comparatively thin. (Not the "thick-dough-thin-toppings" stuff.) This pizza has lots of yummy meats with lots and lots of cheese, then is topped with homemade tomato sauce and baked.

Kids, be sure you get a salad in there someplace...
FAB cares.
This. Is. Perfect.
Well, at least Flat AB thought so.

SlamDumPro, I'm pretty sure Flat AB has declared your pizza "Darn Tasty!"

Either that or, it was "Not like paste-y."
(FAB's little mouth was full.)

Nice job SDP!
Stay tuned, kids, for more Flat fun.
The East Coast Briner Meet is this weekend!

14- FBA Meets Alton in Marietta!
Cool Beans!

Last Saturday, Holliebrooke brought Flat BA to a fund raiser for the Cobb County Library Foundation held at Walker School.

FBA really liked that school...a lot!
Guess who else was there?

Yes, ladies and germs, it's Alton himself. Now, FBA didn't actually get a picture with Alton this time, but he told me it didn't matter. FBA still had fun listening to Alton talk about things like "Chicken doesn't have fingers!" LOL.

Here are a few Briners who hung out at the Walker School. There's Rachel from Marietta and Melissa (GeorgiaPeach), who seems to have lost her way and now lives in Birmingham, Alabama! And, then there's Holliebrooke, who rode in with FBA from South Carolina.

There were a MESS of others who were there, too. There was Tigger, and Liza (pronounced Leeza), Railfan, and HunterAP and his wife. (Hope I didn't miss anyone.)

And, rumor has it that....Widdi Turner was there, too. If that name doesn't ring a bell, that'd be "Frances Anderson, Alton Brown's Biggest Fan."

I'll let Hollie take it from here...
Hi kids! Hollie, here.
Okay THAT photo is just Melissa and me being goofy after the event.

Then we stopped at Cool Beans...because, well, we could!

Flat BA enjoyed his iced mocha and he regaled us with tales - including the fact that part of the espresso show might have been filmed there.

Back home in Greer, South Carolina, FBA just wouldn't hush until I got him some BBQ.

Flat BA ordered the all-you-can eat ribs. He somehow managed to eat two whole plates! (And, he made sure to eat his veggies. Mac and cheese and hush puppies are veggies, right?) He can sure pack it away for a little guy! And, he still had room for the Sweet Potato Crunch! Now THAT alone is worth the trip to Mutt's!

Finally, just before packing his little bags to send him off to the East Coast, I brought FBA to work with me so I could explain what I do for a living. He was making wise cracks and making me laugh.

I'm kinda sad to see the little guy go!
I has lots of fun with him!! :)
--Hollie
One last picture.
FBA says this one is special.
He just grins, takes a deep breath, and says, "Ah...barbecue!"

Stay tuned for more adventures with Flat AB and Flat BA.
"Same Flat time, same Flat channel."

13- FAB lands in the Big Apple, Meets the Big Guy, and Plans to Take over the World?

Top O' The World, Ma!

The NY area Briners, with Flat AB in tow, headed to NYC for the two Alton book signings this week. From all accounts, FAB was fairly well behaved - but he DID insist on climbing to the top of the Empire State building for a better view of the city.

(As usual, some of the pics have larger versions if you click on them.)

But, let's start from the beginning.
Once upon a time, there was a book signing. Aunt Vicky packed FAB up, being sure to bring his raincoat (you just never know), and they hopped a train to the Big Apple. Now this was totally cool since #1 FAB had never been on a train before...and #2, FAB had never been to NYC.

Here's the book, "Feasting on Asphalt:The River Run"
It's available for purchase through Food Network... and your local bookstore, too. And, Season 2 DVDs of Feasting on Asphalt (6 episodes plus bonus materials) are now also available through Food Network.

Vicky met up with a handful of Briners - some of whom are pictured below. (FAB told me was "they were soooo fun!") FAB said "that SlamDunkPro was as tall as the Empire State building!"

So, after standing in - wait this is NY - standing on line for long time FAB finally caught a glimpse of Alton. (Alton walked from the front of the line to the back, saying hi and checking it out.) Then they waited some more. Finally, Vicky and FAB got up to see Alton. "Hi, I'm Alton," he said. That was nice.

Vicky and Alton chatted a bit. Something about Vicky's coat. I mean Alton's coat. And, something about E-bay. LOL. FAB said that Alton said something like, "I miss that coat." And, they both laughed. Alton saw FAB and said, "And, you have HIM." Alton was kind to pose for a pic with FAB and Vicky.
Oh, here's a picture of Vicky waiting in line for the event. Ignore the disembodied hand. No, that wasn't Thing. And, Thing, no, it wasn't a girl. Well, it WAS a girl hand...but she was connected to the rest of a girl and no, she doesn't wanna date you. Sorry.
After the signing, the group of Briners went their separate ways. SDP and Vicky headed down to Chelsea Market - you know - where FN has its headquarters. I don't think there are any photos though, because it started to rain. SDP was careful to keep FAB from melting.
While FAB hasn't been to NYC before, apparently he HAS been doing a good amount of business there. After letting out a giant, "Muhahahaha!" he showed Vicky and SDP where he keeps his secret plans to take over FN. He's only kidding. We think. But, that sign is pretty neat.
Then SDP and Vicky ate at Popburger and eventually hopped their trains back home. Well they did stop at all sorts of cool culinary shops, but FAB said he was tired so he spent most of that time napping in SDP's briefcase.

Hey, I've saved some of the best for last. Here's a pic of the NY area Briner folks - some old, some new. Left to right: Marge and her 2 kids, Closet Kitchenette, Slamdunkpro, sigma_greg, vickatina, Babylon1023 and Hol1023.

FAB waved goodbye and headed back home with SDP for his next adventure.
Have fun FAB.
Be safe!
